from Blackwater Quartet, selection 74

Concluding Remarks on Time and Conduct

The living buried the dead.
This ensemble reflex informed the statistics.
The grave mounds decayed, an immense plain
and later the site of ritual combat.

Priests disguised as demons
danced there— yellow matted hair, boiling eyes
and from the necks exquisite silver bells
hung by bright strings of human entrails.

The creatures edge forward, crying thinly
through the detachment
of each breath, their stagger of steps
too practised to ignore.
